Historical Significance
For almost eight centuries, from 1112 until 1833, Mondoñedo held the esteemed position of Episcopal seat and served as the provincial capital of the Old Kingdom of Galicia. Today Mondoñedo stands as a testament to its illustrious history, beautifully preserved and inviting visitors to journey through its most splendid eras. Discovering Mondoñedo is akin to embarking on a captivating time-travel experience in one of the hidden gems of Galicia.
The town boasts a number of architectural treasures, including the majestic Mondoñedo Cathedral, started in Romanesque style around 1219, and completed with stunning example of Gothic and Baroque architecture. Its intricate detailing and grandeur stand as a testament to the town's historical importance. In 1902 the cathedral was declared a national monument, and in 2015 declared a world heritage site as part of the Northern route of the Camino de Santiago.
Mondoñedo features a variety of historical landmarks that are worth discovering, including the Episcopal Palace, the old fountain known as Fonte Vella, and the historic quarter. This area is characterized by narrow streets that lead to squares surrounded by centuries-old buildings. The historic center of the town offers a glimpse into its past, with notable monuments such as the Santuario de los Remedios, the Seminary, the Hospital de San Pablo, and the Monastery of Os Picos. Pilgrims often pass through its streets, as it serves as an important stop along the Camino Norte del Camino de Santiago, one of the routes to Santiago. In this quarter, one can also find the Ponte do Pasatempo, a bridge associated with a local legend about the wife of Marshal Pedro Pardo de Celta, who was unable to cross and thus could not prevent her husband's execution in the Cathedral square.
Geological Wonder
Mondoñedo is home to Galicia's largest natural cave, Cova do Rei Cintolo. At over 7000 meters long, it is a labyrinth of galleries with several water features creating lakes and rivers inside the cave complex. Archaeological studies have identified human remains from the Upper Pelolitic period, from 30,000 to 40,000 years ago, as well as arrowheads and signs of heaths in the entrance galleries. It is now home to horseshoe bats, various invertebrate and large voles.
The cave is shrouded in myth about its origin, with the best known being that of Rei Cintolo. Said king, (Rei is Gallego for King) the owner and lord of the entire Brea valley, had a beautiful daughter named Xila who was in love with a local count. Their hope of romance was cut short however, when a sorcerer fell in love with Xila. Jealous of her love for the count, he buried the entire kingdom of Cintolo in the interior of the earth. The legend also says that the beautiful princess is still waiting for a knight to bring her back to life by taking her out of the deepest cave in Galicia.
The cave is open for guided visits through the Tourism office of Mondoñedo. Reservations are essential via phone 982 507 177 or in person at the tourism office. Price is 15€. Minimum age 12.
Natural Beauty
Surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills, Mondoñedo is embraced by natural beauty. A 20 minute drive from the town centre in the protected area of Sierra Xistral is Fraga de Vella. It is a stunning landscape, dotted with pines, incredible stone structures and peat bogs where wild horses roam free, and local livestock grace undisturbed underneath the tree canopy. It is a perfect area for hiking regardless of ability. For those who want an easy walk, it is possible to hike in the area on dirt roads, while those who want a bit more adventure can venture onto the marked paths.
Ruta de Agua is an 8km long hiking route that starts from Fonte de Vella in the centre of Mondoñedo. The route goes through the beautiful river valley of the Valiñadares river. It is a circular, 8km route that passes by the beautiful waterfall of Salto do Coro, a 15 m high free-falling waterfall.
Gastronomical delights
Galician cuisine is renowned, and Mondoñedo contributes its own delicious offerings. Local eateries serve up traditional Galician dishes, showcasing fresh seafood, hearty stews, and local specialties like empanadas, accompanied by crisp Galician wines. Many of the restaurants can be found in Plaza do Concello, close to the cathredral.
Mondoñedo is also home to the King of Cakes, El Rei de Tartas, the maker of "Tarta de Mondoñedo" A delicious cake with origins in medieval recipes it is made with raw almonds, angel hair and candied fruits such as figs and cherries.
